ACOUSTIC WINDOWS AND DOORS

Sound protection is becoming increasingly important when building a new home. Living in or near the main road or in medium to high-density housing estates are all situations where you may need acoustic windows and doors. Many new homes are required to reach certain acoustic ratings to ensure they receive building certification.

SOUND AND YOUR HOME

The entire structure of the home – including the walls, roofing, windows and doors – all work together to keep out unwanted noise.

When it comes to your windows and doors, often they are the weakest element in the fight against unwanted external noise. Thus they can have a significant impact in helping insulate your home from noise pollution.

The performance of acoustic windows and doors is measured by an RW number (also known as a Weighted Sound Reduction Index).

This number is used internationally, as a standard by which to measure how well a window or door blocks out sound. The higher the rating, the better the performance of the window or door at blocking out noise.

It’s important to note that glass-only Rw ratings are non-compliant. Window and door Rw ratings are required to comply with acoustic standards.

GOOD DESIGN PRACTICE

Thinking about acoustic protection is important and ideally should be detailed in the design phase.

When it comes to your windows and doors, some design practices worth considering are:

  1. Positioning: The way that windows are positioned in a space can have a significant impact. It is essential to plan the layout carefully.
  2. Seals: Using high-quality seals on windows and doors in noise prone areas will help protect from outdoor noise pollution. Sound can penetrate windows and doors through gaps between the glass and frame.
  3. Product Combinations: Different types of windows and doors will perform better acoustically than others. For the best acoustic results, consider a mix of fixed windows, awning windows, casement windows and sliding doors.
  4. Maintenance: Regularly check seals – through everyday use, seals may need to be adjusted or replaced over time.
